Species Recovery

Why protect the mountain bongo?

Restoring Viable Bongo Populations

The Ragat Chehe Mountain Bongo Trust leads a comprehensive species recovery program focused on restoring viable populations of the critically endangered mountain bongo to their natural habitat.

This effort includes the establishment of a carefully managed reintroduction site, where suitable conditions are created to support the animals’ adaptation and survival in the wild.

Source populations are drawn from captive breeding programs, ensuring strong genetic diversity and healthy individuals for release. Once rewilded, the bongos are closely monitored using modern tracking and observation techniques to assess their behavior, habitat use, and long-term survival.

Through these integrated efforts, the Trust aims to rebuild a self-sustaining mountain bongo population while contributing valuable data to national and global conservation initiatives.
