Habitat Protection
A Coordinated Approach
Joint security patrols are a key strategy in protecting the fragile mountain ecosystem. These patrols are conducted through close collaboration between the Mt. Kenya Joint Security Unit, comprising officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), together with trained community patrol rangers.
Working side by side, these teams safeguard the forest from illegal activities such as poaching, logging, and encroachment, while monitoring wildlife movement and habitat conditions.
This coordinated approach not only enhances security and law enforcement within the landscape, but also strengthens trust and cooperation between conservation authorities and local communities—ensuring a safer and healthier habitat for the endangered mountain bongo and other wildlife.
